How do I fix mirroring issues with my Apple TV and projector?

Have you ever had an issue where your iPad or computer wouldn't mirror to your projector? If you have, the good news is that it's usually pretty easy to fix! Apple uses a technology called AirPlay that allows you to stream content from your Apple device to your projector, via an Apple TV.

What exactly is Apple AirPlay?

Apple AirPlay enables you to stream content from your Mac or iOS device to your Apple TV or other AirPlay enabled device, or mirror your iOS device's entire screen onto a TV or projector. It's an amazing tool for sharing a lesson, using Apple Classroom, or even playing a Youtube video for your class. If you're having issues streaming with AirPlay, it can be resolved a number of ways.

First step - turn it off and on again!

  • When in doubt, turn off your Mac or iPad, and turn it back on again. Sometimes a power cycle can do world of good!
  • Ensure Wi-Fi is on and connected to your desired network.

Second step - restart your Apple TV

  • This can be done either by using the remote on the Apple TV to go to Settings > General > Restart, or by unplugging the the Apple TV for 6 seconds, and plugging back in.

Third step - check your cable connections

Check for updates and compatibility issues:

  • Make sure that you have the latest software on your iOS device and Apple TV.
  • Check for device compatibility: You can AirPlay content only to an Apple TV or AirPlay enabled speaker or receiver. (You can't AirPlay content from your iOS device to another iOS device or to a Mac.)
