Things to consider before changing your school email address
Whether you've just gotten married (congrats!), divorced (congrats?), or are just making a change, we tend to see a few requests per school year from teachers looking to change their school email address.
Changing your school email address is definitely possible, but before doing so there are a few things you should consider and possibly a few changes you'll need to make in order to prepare!

What do I need to know?
When your school email address is changed, your old address becomes an 'alias', so any emails sent to your previous address will still arrive without you doing anything (nice!).
Services and websites that you've signed into via the 'Sign in with Google' option may recognize your new email address as a completely new account, in which case you would no longer be able to access that service without creating a new account first (and in turn, you'd lose access to your previous data).
For any services you'd like to maintain access to, we'd recommend first logging into that account and taking a look at your account preferences. Here are a few things to look out for:
- Most services will allow you to disable the Google Sign-In option and allow you to sign in via a username/email address and password instead. You should do this when possible prior to changing your address to ensure you can still access the service after the change takes place (you can definitely re-enable this after your address changes).
- For Education accounts, Canva does not allow Google Sign-In to be disabled, nor can your email address be changed. If you have any Canva designs associated with your school account that you'd like to maintain access to, we suggest sharing them with your new school email address (or a personal email) prior to actually changing your school email address.
- If your school subscribes to Seesaw for Schools, we can adjust your Seesaw account at the same time that we change your email address. You should be able to keep using the Sign In With Google button without making any changes.
- For your MyEducation BC account, your school office will need to submit a ticket to MyEd support detailing the desired change. Only MyEd support has the ability to update your MyEd account information.
