Identifying and Unboxing iPads and Chromebooks
Identifying and Unboxing New Devices
By the end of this document you should be able to:
- Identify devices your school has received
- Unbox devices and device carts
- Inform Classmate of what has arrived, where it's located, and what has been unpacked by submitting a support request (https://app.classmate.team/hc/en-us/requests/new)
“Hi Classmate! We’ve received 32 iPads, 64 Chromebooks, and 1 iPad charging cart and 2 Chromebook charging carts. We’ve unpacked all the devices and placed them in their charging carts. The carts are currently sitting in the Grade 5 classroom to charge. The Chromebook keys are in the office and the iPad combination code is 1234”
Charging Carts
There are two types of charging carts your school may be receiving, a Chromebook cart or an iPad cart. You may already have one or two of these in your school. (colours may vary)

Chromebook Cart: |
As you would expect, these carts come in mighty large boxes! We suggest grabbing a friend to help you unpack the cart. You will need to lift it off of the cardboard base. Follow the instructions printed on the side of the box for the best unboxing experience.
The Chromebook Cart (Ergotron) comes with a generic key that can be used to unlock all the Chromebook carts in the school. Be sure to keep one in the office lockbox so that we’ll have access to the cart when we’re visiting over the summer.
iPad Cart (Bretford): Setting the combination
- Open the padlock using the default combination “0000”.
- Insert the included programming key and turn 90 degrees.
- Set your desired combination. We suggest using the same code for all carts.
- Remove the programming key.
- Store the programming key in the office lockbox.
- Share code with Classmate via a support request.
iPads
iPads are shipped in Packs of 10 or individually. Depending on how many iPads your school has ordered, you’ll receive various box combinations. 33 iPads would be divided into three 10-Packs and three individual boxes.
- Teacher iPads - Keep chargers with the iPads for teacher use.
- Student iPads - Keep charger boxed and place them inside the charging cart on the top shelf. We will label and store them accordingly.
iPad Cases
The best way to find the cases your school has purchased is by opening the box! We generally purchase cases from the following manufacturers: Kohmo, HiTek, Gumdrop and MaxCases.
- Teacher iPads - we suggest installing the cases as you unbox them.
- Student iPads - we suggest installing the cases after we’ve completed the setup. You can leave the cases on top of each iPad Cart.
Chromebooks
Large numbers of Chromebooks are generally shipped on pallets wrapped in cellophane. Chromebooks will be individually packed. Inside each box is a Chromebook and a charger.
If the Chromebook cart is pre-wired with chargers, consolidate all the Chromebook charger in boxes and leave them on top of the Chromebook carts. If the carts aren't pre-wired, you'll want to check out our article on Wiring Chromebook Carts.
Miscellaneous Tech
Your school may also receive other devices to complement your existing technology. This may include things like:
- Apple Pencils - Pair each pencil with a teacher device. Spare parts included in the box should be stored with the extra chargers in the charging cart on the top shelf.
- Replacement projector bulbs - Store in a secure location (Office, tech closet).
- Apple TVs - Place in appropriate classrooms for installation.
Packaging Disposal
After unboxing all these devices, you’ll have plenty of cardboard, plastic and paper to dispose of. In the past, we’ve tasked parent volunteers with the disposal of large amounts of recycling. If available, use the school recycling facilities.
